Founded in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, Brookgreen Gardens is America's first public sculpture garden. Located in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, across from Huntington Beach State Park off of U.S. Highway 17. Brookgreen Gardens contains the largest outdoor holdings of American sculpture in the world with over 900 pieces. Covering 50 acres, the sculptures in Brookgreen Gardens span the American sculpture period from the early 1800s to present day.
The Huntingtons held over 9,000 acres in South Carolina's once famous lowcountry rice fields where they decided to establish Brookgreen Gardens as a place to display Anna Hyatt Huntington's sculptures as well as other prominent American sculptors. Just south of the ever-popular Myrtle Beach, South Carolina- Brookgreen Gardens is a worthy place to visit.
