Homemade Backpacking Camera Case

How to Make your own PureBound Camera Case...

Since 2003 Billy has been carrying this style of camera case to keep his camera secure and easily accessible on all of his adventures. The camera case is created with Tyvek.

Information about Tyvek®

Tyvek is lightweight, durable, and resistant to water - making Tyvek useful for adventures. In small quantities Tyvek can be found at your local Post Office, or Building Sites generally for Free. Larger quantities of Tyvek can be found at hardware stores and online.

Exactly how is Tyvek® made:
Tyvek is formed by a fully integrated process using continuous and very fine fibers of 100 percent high-density polyethylene that are randomly distributed and nondirectional. These fibers are first flash spun, then laid as a web on a moving bed before being bonded together by heat and pressure - without the use of binders, sizers or fillers. (DuPont.com)

The camera case sits on your backpack shoulder strap for easy access to capture those "awe-inspiring moments". Placing your camera within reach has you taking more memories home with you- while avoiding those missed opportunities.

From the wetness of the Appalachian Trail to the sands of the Pacific Crest Trail this camera case keeps the conditions at bay and your camera at your reach.

STEP 1: CAMERA CASE SUPPLIES NEEDED

* Thread (or Tyvek tape)
* Basic Sewing Machine (or Hand Sewing)
* Velcro (Found at your local Craft Store)

In this camera case build we use Priority Mail tyvek envelopes we acquired for Free at the local Post Office.

Cutting out the Camera Case

STEP 2: CUTTING THE PATTERN

Cut two rectangles from the Tyvek envelope.

Note that your camera case will vary depending on the size of camera. The most important thing to remember when measuring is to make sure that one rectangle will wrap entirely around the camera. Allow a quarter inch seam in your measurements for the sides of the camera.

Alternatively, you can cut only one piece of Tyvek by measuring the width of the camera and multiplying by 2.5, giving you the height of the camera case with the overlapping closure. Take the height of your camera and multiply by 1.5 to find the width of the camera case.

STEP 3: SEWING SIDE SEAMS
Place the rectangles on top of the other inside-out and sew a quarter inch seam from top to bottom. Leaving the top and bottom open. Flip inside out when finished.

Attaching the velcro to the tyvek

STEP 4: ATTACHING THE VELCRO
NOTE: ADDING VELCRO WAS THE TRICKIEST PART OF MAKING THE CASE. MY ONLY ADVICE IS TO TEST AND TEST AGAIN TO MAKE SURE THE VELCRO IS ON THE CORRECT SIDE WHEN SEWING TO THE CASE.

The strap can be made long enough to place around your wrist for town excursions. Fold the bottom of the case to the middle to form a pocket. Cut one strip of velcro that measures the same width as the top of case. Pin or use adhesive to attach velcro. Place the opposite side to the top of the folded over edge. Add second piece of longer velcro ¾ of an inch from middle seam. Sew around each piece of velcro.

STEP 5: ATTACHING STRAP
After attaching the velcro cut a third piece and attach the opposite side to the long strap. Sew an “X” across this piece to attach. (This will create an arm strap so the case can easily be attached to a backpack or wrapped around your arm.)

STEP 6: SEWING FINAL SEAMS
Turn case inside out with velcro folded in. Sew side seams from top to bottom. Make sure that all velcro works accordingly and that camera fits into your newly designed camera case.

*THIS CASE CAN ALSO BE USED AS A CELL PHONE CASE, ELECTRONICS CASE, AND OTHER ACCESSIBLE PERSONAL SUPPLIES.
